Fossem eruditos ou ing\u00e9nuos, os pintores de azulejo usaram este g\u00e9nero art\u00edstico como express\u00e3o \u00edmpar das decora\u00e7\u00f5es integrais, o que transforma esta arte num <i>unicum<\/i> no contexto internacional.<br \/>\nO ARTIS \u2013 Instituto de Hist\u00f3ria da Arte, enquanto centro de investiga\u00e7\u00e3o universit\u00e1rio, associa-se \u00e0 paternidade cient\u00edfica desta obra, produzida por iniciativa de Lib\u00f3rio Manuel Silva, a quem se deve o esmerado corpo fotogr\u00e1fico do presente livro. Pensamos vir ao encontro das refer\u00eancias incontorn\u00e1veis neste campo, como o foram Jos\u00e9 Queir\u00f3s, Verg\u00edlio Correia, Reynaldo dos Santos e Jo\u00e3o Miguel dos Santos Sim\u00f5es, para quem o Azulejo portugu\u00eas \u00e9 a mais fundamental das manifesta\u00e7\u00f5es art\u00edsticas no sentido da caracteriza\u00e7\u00e3o da identidade cultural portuguesa.<br \/>\nEstamos certos de que assim contribu\u00edmos para o reconhecimento de um patrim\u00f3nio art\u00edstico que, sendo de \u00e2mbito nacional, possui ineg\u00e1veis val\u00eancias universais.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #da9d21;\">Among the different art forms that define Portugal&#8217;s artistic culture, due to their continued practice and to their contribution for the country&#8217;s national identity, the <i>azulejo<\/i> certainly enjoys a special standing. From the 15th century onwards, the use of tile decorations \u2013 which during some periods attained a sort of ubiquitousness \u2013 enriched architectural spaces with new scenic and vernacular dimensions. Overall, the articulation between the architecture and these decorations is well balanced and coherent, leading to a successful visual result.<br \/>\nWhen one admires \u2013 as so often throughout this book \u2013 the tile-covered interiors of Baroque churches, adorned with polychrome patterns and blue and white motifs, or the fa\u00e7ades of houses that have gained, with the use of <i>azulejos<\/i>, a radiant and vivid plasticity, tile decorations emerge as a major art form, with the talent of Portuguese artists giving rise to profoundly original creations. These works are always different, born out of the wish to cover a building&#8217;s walls with coloured ceramic elements. The tile painters, whether erudite or na\u00efve, used this art form to create a highly original kind of decoration, unique within the international context.<br \/>\nThis book, put together with the scientific supervision of the academic research centre ARTIS (Institute of Art History), was initially envisioned by Lib\u00f3rio Manuel Silva, author of the thorough photographic survey displayed in the following pages. It also benefited from the multidisciplinary scientific research enabled by the coordinating efforts of the <i>Azulejo<\/i> Research Network. This research group, part of the ARTIS research centre, brought together different art historians, many of whom belong to the most recent generation of scholars.
